Summer Car and Vacation Travel Safety Tips

TOP SAFETY TIPS FOR SUMMER TRAVELERS FROM PERSONAL SAFETY EXPERT DAVID NANCE, FOUNDER OF THE SABRE PERSONAL SAFETY ACADEMY

Summer is coming and so are the road trips, regardless of rising gas prices. While many prefer the benefits of driving to vacation destinations, without the worry of flight delays, cancellations or overpacking fees, it can also come with unexpected safety emergencies. David Nance, founder of the SABRE Personal Safety Academy, provides ten travel protection tips to make summer travel just what it should be – a time to explore without worry.

Personal safety travel products from SABRE, the leading personal safety brand with police and consumers worldwide, are also recommended below. Product samples, photos and interviews are available upon request.

1.       Avoid Nighttime Driving. Driving through the night to save time is common for summer travelers. But the National Safety Council says traffic death rates are three times greater at night than during the day. If you can’t avoid night driving, have at least one person stay awake to talk to the driver.

2.       Don’t Take Chances At Your Hotel Or Rental. Lock the doors, and secure important belongings like passports and wallets in the safe. The SABRE Door Stop Alarm easily fits in your suitcase or carry on and helps block doors from opening to prevent intrusions. The alarm sounds as soon as door pressure is applied and can be heard up to three football fields’ length away to help deter a threat.

3.       Be Engaged – Don’t Be An Easy Target.  It’s easy to get engrossed by your smartphone or inattentive while listening to music with headphones but these distractions can keep you from noticing potential threats while exploring a new city.

4.       Use Your Smartphone To Your Advantage. Consider using SABRE’s free Personal Safety App.  The app sends help alerts to the user’s selected contacts with the user’s geo-location when the in-app alert button is pressed or when the new SABRE SMART Pepper Spray is deployed. It can also alert first responders with a subscription.

5.       Carry Personal Safety Products. Carry a small, practical, and easy to use personal protection tool such as pepper spray or a personal alarm. It is legal to carry SABRE Pepper Spray and a SABRE Personal Alarm in all 50 states, but some cities and states have specific regulations. Check the local laws where you’ll be traveling.

6.       Strength In Numbers. Don’t walk alone at night and do not leave a party with a stranger. It’s always best to take a friend with you.

7.       Toast Safely. It’s easy to get lost in the fun. Drink safely! Keep an eye on your drink and do not accept drinks from strangers.  If possible, drink from a bottle and not an open glass or cup.  Do not allow travel partners who’ve had more than their limit to leave alone or with strangers.

8.       Keep Your Distance.  Leave at least 12 feet between yourself and strangers to give yourself more time to respond if a potential threat arises. Distance gives you more time to consider possible reactions, and an attacker will raise suspicions if they must take strides to reach you.

9.       Inform Others Where You’ll Be Traveling. It’s best practice to share your intended location and travel times with someone who can check in on your home while you’re away to ensure everything stays safe, and also to send help to your location if your return is greatly delayed, especially if you are out traveling out of cell phone range.

10.   Always Have Emergency Numbers In Your Phone And Wallet. Should something happen, and you are admitted to a hospital alone, the staff may have the ability to bypass your cell phone code to access emergency contacts. You may also consider keeping a card in your wallet next to your ID with your emergency contact names and numbers, should you be separated from your phone.
